ABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Director General, Dakuku Peterside, has tasked law enforcement agents to bring to book the killers of prominent human rights activist and lawyer, Ken Atsuwete.

Unknown gunmen on Sunday killed Atsuwete, the latest, and most prominent, victim of the recurrent violence in Rivers State.

“This is perhaps the deadliest of several politically-motivated killings perpetrated in Rivers state in recent times,” Peterside bemoaned.

He blamed the killing on the administration of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

PDP is the ruling party in the state.

Atsuwete was most recently lawyer to Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader held for murder charges the party alleges are trumped up.

“Without any doubt, the killers of Ken Atsuwete were driven by the 9insidious objective of instilling fear in the rank of the opposition, silence every voice of reason and stifle opposition in Rivers State.

The killing of Ken Atsuwete is perhaps the height of impunity which is now an everyday way of life in my home state of Rivers.”

Peterside, a losing candidate in the 2015 governorship poll characterized by deadly violence, called for a probe into the death.

“I call on the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of State Security Service and other national security authorities to carry out extensive investigation of this awful incident, bring the perpetrators to book and restore sanity to our dear state.”
