ABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facilitating a Peace Summit to ensure harmony during polls scheduled for Bayelsa State next month.

The summit, planned with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will be held on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

“The essence of the programme is for the 20 political parties and candidates contesting the 5th December 2015 governorship election in the state to publicly restate their commitment to a non-violent and peaceful election and by signing the peace accord,” Timidi Wariowei the commission’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity, said.

He added that the commission has already sent invitation letters to all political parties’ chairpersons to come along with governorship candidates to sign the Peace Deal.

The majority of them have indicated their willingness to be part of this historic event.

Due to the importance the commission attaches to a peaceful election, the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Amina Zakari, will personally come to Bayelsa State to witness the Peace Deal.

Also expected at the event are the Commissioners of Police for Bayelsa State, Heads of security agencies, traditional/religious rulers, civil society organisations, media and other stakeholders.
