ABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE Edo State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concern over alleged police harassment of its members ahead of the September 10 governorship election.

The party alleged intimidation, unlawful arrest, detainment and torture of  its members.

Publicity Secretary, Chris Osa Nehikhare, also accused Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and his party, All Progressive Congress (APC), of mounting pressure on the police to embark on the unlawful acts.

The party alleged Oshiomhole ordered officers to arrest some youths who participated in a rally by governorship running mate, John Yakubu at Akenzua, road in Benin City claiming they were cultists who just had an outdoor meeting.

The PDP also alleged some APC thugs, driving a branded van, drove into a ward meeting in Fugar, Estako Central, and injured two PDP supporters.
These are said to be receiving treatment in hospital.

“Even with the information that they know the driver and where he had goneto hide the vehicle, our boys were arrested when they went to the police station to report the matter,” alleged Nehikhare.

He alleged Oshiomhole had instructed the police to launch a large scale unwarranted arrest and detention of youths ahead of polls.

“The police should not be used to constitute an impediment for our freedom of democratic choice. We have had enough of impunity and oppression.”
