Ambassadors worried by Sidiq’s arrest

LAGOS, (CAJ News) – THE recent arrest of blogger, Abubakar Usman Sidiq, has further created divisions between government and the people, the League of Progressives Ambassadors of Nigeria (LEPAN) claimed.

The pro democracy group thus condemned the arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) saying it had drawn reactions from several young Nigerians.

“The arrest of Abubakar Usman Sidiq has further alienated the people from the government, which ought to be more focused on fostering trust,”  Adewunmi Emoruwa, President of the League of Progressive Ambassadors of Nigeria, stated.

The official said a large majority of the demographic group the  organization represented had described the arrest of. Sidiq as a threat to  free speech.

“Young Nigerians are also concerned about the style of arrest, abuse of  powers and the response of government to the issue, which has been  disavowed by the general public.”

The EFCC stated in a press release by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, that it arrested the popular blogger for alleged “cyberstalking.”

It is alleged this is in connection to a blog criticising EFCC chairman,  Ibrahim Magu.
